Thinking about moving my blog to another spot rather than on my website -- I'll keep you posted!

Been Gone way too long!

May 14, 2012
Well been off painting and that's a good thing!  I've been asked to contribute some paintings to an exhibit at the Cabarus County Galleries for an exhibit called "Animal House".  I'm excited about it!  Hopefully some new clients will come from the exposure!

Why I do this work...

April 2, 2012
As soon as she saw it the tears started up and it took several seconds
before she could utter..."I love it"..

That was the response from a recent portrait of an old girl named "Maggie".  Obviously, it is so fulfilling to do what I do and to get that kind of response.

I love this stuff!!!!

Another Lesson

March 27, 2012
Had another lesson on photos and painting recently.  Got a commission for a painting and was caught up in other life stuff (my sixtieth birthday, my daughter in from out of town, etc.)  but knew I had a deadline for a painting due soon.  When I finally had time to start it I realized what a horrible photo I was working from -- nice pose - but flashed out eyes, blurry, etc.  Scared me!  Ultimately it all worked out -- the client loved it-- but it was a lesson to really take the time and make s...

New "Old Guy"

March 9, 2012
Hi -- just wanted to post this on my blog.  Did on Facebook and some unexpected people loved it.  It's been so interesting what people do respond to !  The challenge with this painting was his gray/white face.  Had to convince the client to go with that sap green background.  Think it's a great compliment to his coloring!  Hope you like!!!

Balance

February 27, 2012
Been working at a restaurant for the last month to try and supplement my art work until I get it to the point that I can support myself with it.  I've decided I'll have to either quit or cut my hours back because it has left me no time for painting.  I feel like my soul has been cut out.  Got to figure out how to have the balance --- even while I'm trying to keep my head above water.  Painting is too important to who I am to let it go by the wayside.

Juggling

February 22, 2012
Can't believe it's been a week since I posted here.  I've been juggling a new part time job which has been a bit overwhelming.  I was so hopeful that my art would sustain me through the new year, but I'm not quite there yet.  It was disappointing to have to take time away from painting.  Truthfully I could paint every day pretty much all day.  Once I become immersed in a painting time passes so quickly and I'm in what I would consider an "altered state".  So my gameplan is to continue to get ...

Photographing your dog for a painting

February 15, 2012
One of the biggest challenges I face when doing a dog's portrait is getting a good photo.  I rely on the person commissioning me to provide photos.  Once in a while I get a wonderful shot with enough resolution to see detail and it's relatively effortless. A lot of the time I'm working with 3 or 4 or more photos combing aspects from each trying to get a beautiful painting that looks like your pet.  Some hints: Don't use your flash if possible.  If you can photograph your pet outside that's gr...

Other Painting

February 13, 2012
Very excited right now about the other painting I'm doing.  Working with Miriam Durkin in Charlotte in a large portrait class (people).  I love painting people as well as dogs.  It is a special pleasure to have a model sit for me.  There is something so magical about seeing the subtleties of light when you have someone sit for you.  There are colors there that you never see in a photo.  Of course with dogs a photo is really the only way you can paint them --- unless they're asleep of course. ...

Ruby

February 8, 2012
Ruby is the beautiful shepherd that I posted in the last post.  We got her as a rescue from German Shepherd Rescue. Katie and I drove to Raleigh to pick her up and she was a bit like a zombie when we got her.  Once we had her home for a while she became the most loving dog we've ever owned.  If she had been smaller she would have been a lap dog.  The rescue group said that when they found her she was about nine months old and had already had a litter of pups.  Don't think she had a very good ...
